Andy Rice, journalist and broadcaster
I'm Andy Rice, co-creator of Road To Gold.
Together with world-class coach Hamish Willcox (coach to Pete Burling & Blair Tuke), we've put together a program that's never before been seen in the sailing world.
For most of us these past couple of years, there have been few opportunities to get in our boats. We're a bunch of landlocked sailors...
But now there's a way to make progress, even if you're stuck at home!
Whether you're a weekend warrior, or working towards the Olympics in 2024, Road To Gold will help you build a solid strategy and give you the framework to make dramatic and persistent progress on the water.
Hamish Willcox, 3-time 470 World Champion and gold medal-winning Olympic coach
9 out of 10 sailors don't.
It's entirely possible to make predictable improvements to your sailing performance. But not if you go about it the usual way...
Most sailors just jump in the boat and hope for the best. Maybe they'll have a good day, maybe they won't.
If they come in first place, then well done!
If they end up at the back of the fleet, well... that was just bad luck!
So let me ask you:
How long has it been since you saw a leap forward in your racing performance?
If it’s been a while, then what are you going to do differently? Because as Einstein once observed: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
OK, so you need to do something different... But what exactly? Unless you're lucky enough to have a good support group, there's very little guidance out there.
What you're missing is structure and direction.
There's so many different aspects to consider in our sport, it can all become too much to handle!
We've got to perform a balancing act, including (but not limited to) the following things:
♥️ staying fit enough to properly handle your boat
🛠️ keeping your gear properly maintained and tuned so it runs at its best
🌪️ learning the venue, the local weather, etc
🗣️ managing your crew, keeping everyone motivated and on the same page
⚡ maintaining your energy during a regatta, staying on top of your nerves
How do you normally go about improving your sailing knowledge and skills?
As you're here, I'm sure you've already got an impressive library of sailing books.
Maybe you pick up tips and tricks from others in the boat park.
You may have some training DVDs, or use Youtube.
You probably spend quite a bit of cash on new gear.
And if you're REALLY serious, you even have a coach...
All good options, but they each have their drawbacks...
In a complex sport like sailing, there are so many different choices for you to make – so many directions you can go in – that it can be overwhelming.
And the main issue with the above solutions is that most of them take a laser-focused approach to just ONE area of your sailing. So while you make progress in one area, the others fall behind.
There's no sense of the BIG PICTURE. Where to spend your time. The things you should do to make the most impact, and in what order to do them.
Gear CAN make you go faster, but only if you know how to use it effectively.
And while a coach is great for giving you an Action Plan and keeping you on track, they can be prohibitively expensive...
What you really need is the topdown view. A solid roadmap, created by someone who has been there and learnt things the hard way.
Up until recently, there hasn't been a resource in the sailing world that takes you through the whole process of running a successful sailing season, start to finish.
From the mind of Hamish Willcox, coach to Pete Burling & Blair Tuke, Road To Gold is a comprehensive step-by-step program that takes you through the entire process of becoming an effective racer, no matter your level, or what you sail.
Through 40 years of experience coaching at the highest level, Hamish has refined his blueprint for success into a simple 12-step system. You get a proven sequence of priorities, laid out in a way so that each step builds on the last.
Road To Gold is not just a training program, but a life-long self-coaching tool. It reveals the gaps in your knowledge and skills and provides the framework needed to systematically eliminate them.
It gives you the tools to go out and make it happen for yourself – to create a realistic plan to bridge your gaps and become an all-round effective racer.
Hamish has observed that time and time again, sailors squander the resources available to them... Putting their efforts into areas that will bring little return (or even do damage). Well, no more! The battle-tested structure of Road To Gold means that you don't have to rely on guesswork anymore.
You no longer need to waste time, energy or money in areas that won't bring you results. Follow the system laid out for you, and you're guaranteed to see dramatic improvements on the race track.
Hamish Willcox burst on to the international sailing scene in 1981 when, aged just 19, he and his helmsman Dave Barnes won the 470 World Championships at their first attempt. They won two more world titles in 1983 and 1984.
Since moving into coaching, Hamish has been to seven Olympic Games and helped his athletes win multiple world championships titles. He's been involved in five America's Cup campaigns, primarily in the weather programmes, but also doing after-guard roles for in-house racing and training.
These days Hamish is perhaps best known for coaching Pete Burling & Blair Tuke to gold at the Rio Games in 2016. Earlier this year, he supported them in their defence of the America's Cup, and helped them win another silver medal in the 49er at Tokyo.
Back in the mid-80s, Hamish was tasked with taking Japan from emerging sailing nation to top of the Olympic pile. But he soon realised that the Japanese 470 sailors were missing some major parts of the equation.
As Hamish told me: “They’d ask me a really detailed point about how to execute the Nth degree of a manoeuvre without understanding the basics of how to tune the 470 for decent boatspeed.”
So he took the blueprint for world-beating success that had powered him to three 470 world titles in four years, and laid it out as clearly and methodically as possible in his campaign manual Winning In 470s.
That book sold out extremely quickly in Japan, and by the end of the 1980s Japan was celebrating its first 470 World Champions. It's looked looked strong in the 470 ever since, with serious medal chances for the home nation in both the Men’s and Women’s event in the Tokyo Games this summer.
Fast forward to summer 2020, mid-pandemic. Normally Hamish and I would be too busy to create a program of this scope. But with all events cancelled, the two of us had a LOT of extra time on our hands. So we decided to team up and update his campaign manual into a comprehensive program, with all the benefits that come from hosting it on the internet (regular updates and feedback from our community).
And here you have it! The distillation of Hamish's 40 years of world-class experience into one place.
The first program to lift the curtain on campaigning at the highest level and make it accessible to all.
Who is the Road To Gold for – specifically?
Well, if you are a racing sailor and looking to step up your game, then this program is likely a good fit for you...
Whether you're a...
...Road To Gold will help accelerate your results on the race course.
That's because the principles work at all levels of the sport. The details may be different for your specific class, but the areas to focus on (and ignore!) are the same no matter what you sail.
The Road To Gold blueprint has been battled-tested over countless Olympic & America's Cup campaigns... It's the same sequence of priorities Hamish used to take Burling & Tuke from silver medallists in 2012 to gold medal champions in 2016.
It's also been used in youth and junior training. In fact, America's Cup legend Russell Coutts has been introducing the Road To Gold principles into his own youth training program in New Zealand.
And keep reading to see the wide range of Road To Goldsters who have been using the program to take their sailing to the next level.

Hamish has always kept in good shape, even into his 60s. When you join him for this 45-minute workout, you'll see why! The routine is specially developed to give you the strength and flexibility you need to get the edge over the competition and avoid injury. And if exercise isn't really your thing, don't be put off! As one Road To Goldster wrote to tell us:
"The 45 minute core routine is like a religion to me now. I do it consistently 2-3 times a week and the improvements have been great. First time I almost cried in agony but now I can do the whole programme fairly easy :-D"
Since launching the program at the end of 2020, we've received tons of great feedback from our Road To Goldsters.
“As one of your weekend warrior members we’re seeing great results in our club racing now. Gone from mediocrity to winning. Uber exciting. We both worked hard on fitness and nutrition in lockdown. With more focused thought and practice on starting (haven’t had a bad start yet), and made massive improvements even in my old boat.”
Zena Martin, GP14 sailor
“Thanks to Andy and Hamish for putting this program together. It's incredible to have such an amazing resource and I really see how you guys poured your hearts and souls into it. I hope to take you guys with me on my own Road To Gold, and I hope to see more from you in the near future!”
Micky Munns, 470 sailor
“I've been catching up with RTG this week. What a cool tool this is!”
Nic Asher, 470 & Melges 32 World Champion
“Thank you guys! The program’s discussion about venue, playbook, and knowledge build in advance is so obvious, but easy to skip over until someone makes you think about it. Last event was truly the best we ever sailed the boat. RTG had a big impact on where we spent time and energy.”
Scot Zimmerman, Melges 24 sailor
“Road To Gold is very thorough! It's given me a lot of new knowledge and methods to work with. Thank you for putting it together! The Training Kit already helped me gain some insight in where I can improve first. I am sure that this course is going to help me level up my sailing.”
Jan-Willem Verherbrugge, F16 catamaran sailor
“Thank you so much, this has been an amazing resource and a great time!”
Maura Dewey, Laser Radial sailor
“We’re definitely improving thanks to you guys. This was our best open yet.”
Rob Allen, Merlin Rocket sailor
“Thank you so much for putting together the Road To Gold program. Once I've finished a chapter I can hardly wait to start the next one! It is very insightful, although at times it makes me feel like a beginner again 😊”
Jan-Willem te Gussinklo, Dart 18 sailor
“I just want to reach out and say a massive THANK YOU for the Road To Gold. It has been absolutely fantastic! I live in Sweden and we don't have any infrastructure in place for my class (mixed offshore) in terms of coaches, organized training etc. So RTG has really provided me with an excellent framework with clear priorities so I can work efficiently toward my goal of the 2024 Olympics. It means the world to me that you put together this course and it is worth WAY more than what I paid for it.”
Leif Jägerbrand, Mixed Offshore sailor
“Thank you for creating and providing such a terrific learning experience! I’ve enjoyed all of the information you and Hamish have presented, and look forward to continuing to learn more.”
David Watt, Star sailor
“This has been an incredibly positive experience. Can’t wait to go sailing and try to put some of it into practice.”
CL, 505 sailor
“Really like this course! It is helping me already. It's also been very good for my confidence even though I'm already 56 and been racing all my life.”
Sander van Doorn, Laser Masters sailor
“Thank you again for the great content. It's really interesting to watch you guys talking about high performance sailing! Always good to have some more input and especially with such high quality.”
Philipp Autenrieth, 470 sailor
“Road To Gold kept me thinking about the game, and how to play the game, better than any other book or webinar. So, thanks for your hard work and help. It has already paid off!!”
Kevin Kenny, J/22 & J/70 sailor

Why not learn from one of the best in the world?
Coaches from all over the world have been letting us know how Road To Gold is helping them take their coaching to the next level.
“As a coach I've had some great results, and I owe a lot of that to Hamish Willcox with all the stuff he's learned over the years. If you want some good tips, Road To Gold is the way towards a gold medal.”
Nathan Handley, Olympic 49er sailor & gold medal-winning coach
“The courses are fantastic to watch, even from the coach perspective. Really great job. Looking forward to the next sessions.”
Christos Chionas, 49er, Laser and Optimist coach, Founder of VMG Coach
“This has been so helpful and eye opening from both a sailor's perspective and as a coach. Worth every dollar and every minute. Thanks Andy, Hamish and the whole RTG community! Looking forward to getting back on the race course!”
Steve McBride, Parasailing, Development and HP Coach
“I wanted to say Road To Gold is really great! Many thanks and well done again for coming up with this great program.”
Eran Sela, Olympic 470 sailor & coach
“A simple yet detailed program on what really matters when managing an Olympic campaign. Very interesting and effective Q&A discussion from both Andy and Hamish as well as great input from the best in the world sharing their experience! Worth every penny and to be honest, I found it quite cheap for the knowledge shared with us. Thank you RTG Team!”
Álvaro Marinho, Olympic 470 sailor & gold medal-winning coach
“Road To Gold is such a cool program – it has inspired me to level up my coaching game. Thank you for setting it up!”
Silke Basedow, J/70 sailor & coach
The boat, the equipment, the coaching, replacements, repairs, not to mention all the other campaign costs like travel and entry fees.
It can all end up costing anywhere from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars!
In fact, the market rate for a coach of Hamish's calibre is around $1000/day (and that's before you factor in the travel, accommodation, rib hire, fuel etc).
With Road To Gold, over the 12 modules you'll gain access to worksheets and action-oriented video lessons with Hamish. The course is structured to deliver the greatest results in the shortest amount of time. Combined with the bonuses, including the Live Q&A sessions and exclusive expert interviews, the program is designed to show you what you need to focus on, and just as importantly to steer you away from time-sapping and money-draining distractions!
With the huge amount of championship-winning experience and knowledge that Hamish is sharing on this course, it wouldn't be unreasonable to put a large price tag on Road To Gold. We'll probably increase the price of the program one day. But for the time being, we want to make this knowledge and wisdom accessible to as many people as possible, especially when regattas are in short supply.
So the price of the program works out to about $28 per module across the 12 chapters – and the wisdom contained in just ONE of those chapters could be the difference between winning and losing your next race.
We'll help you bring a new level of focus to your sailing and your campaign, and for less than the price of a new dinghy jib. We can also guarantee that the value from this course will last a good deal longer than that jib too, by the way...
(Still not sure you can manage the price? Don't forget, Road To Gold will also help you keep those campaign costs down. When we show you the best areas to spend your time, effort and money, you'll actually start seeing better results with less overall input.)
Some common questions we get from sailors before they sign up to Road To Gold...
While there's no substitute for real time on the water, there are still plenty of things to be done while you're ashore. Sailing is a sport where you have so many decisions to make that you need to get your priorities straight. Every wrong decision costs you in time and effort.
Road To Gold helps you take a good look at your existing processes, making sure you've got the best ones in place. Even if you can't practise them in your boat, you'll be amazed by the jump forward in progress when you hit the water again.
For example, there's no reason why you can't learn the theory of weather, tactics and strategy at home, and then race better when you're back in the boat.
We're confident that if you implement the strategies inside Road To Gold, you'll start seeing improvement to your sailing within the first month of the program. And if not, that's why we have our 30 day guarantee 😉
Of course, your results will vary depending on how intensively you go through the program, and where you're at currently with your sailing.
Our #1 recommendation is to start from the beginning and go through each of the 12 chapters in sequence, over 12 weeks. This is because each step is designed to build on the last, so after 3 months you'll have become an all-round competent sailor, ready to handle pretty well anything that the race course throws at you.
However, if you feel you're particularly weak in one area, say weather knowledge, then feel free to jump directly to Chapter 9 (where we cover wind, waves & tide). Whatever your individual goals demand...
All in all, the RTG blueprint will never be a replacement for effort. Winning takes work! But it can help you avoid making a bunch of mistakes the first time around, give you the RIGHT way of doing things and provide you with the shortcuts to success.
The core sessions are centred around deep-dive video discussions between me (Andy Rice) and Hamish Willcox. The sessions run to approx 1.5 hours per chapter. The Q&A coaching call archives, which are there to supplement the material, come with timecodes so you can quickly find the questions most relevant to you.
If you pick the mid-tier Pro Plan, then you'll get access to recordings of our Live Q&A Group Coaching Calls. Each week, you can get your burning questions answered, as well as access all past session recordings.
We know people learn in lots of different ways, so the sessions are also supplemented with worksheets, diagrams, cheatsheets and templates to help you get the most from the material.
If you're a multi-tasker who likes to learn on the go, then you can download all sessions in MP3 format. And if English isn't your native language, each video comes with English subtitles (computer-generated, not perfect yet but still helpful!) Recently we've introduced the feature to search through the transcript, so you can find the exact topics you need right away.
Road To Gold is a comprehensive course, so it's unlikely you will finish it in just a week! But work through it at your own pace and take notes along the way. When you come back to certain sections and refer to your original notes, you'll realise how much you've progressed with your confidence and your approach to your sailing. It is all a process. For any obstacles or moments where you wonder if you have the talent, you'll find there is a way of acquiring the talent.
Go through the program at your own pace – it's not going anywhere! Either take it methodically, one step at a time from start to finish, or dip in and out as you please. Listen to one MP3 session per day, or do a whole module over the weekend – it's entirely up to you!
Road To Gold will be great for Olympic sailors, but the nuts & bolts, the mechanics of putting together a winning campaign, are pretty much the same whatever you sail and whatever level you're at. Whether you race a dinghy, a keelboat, a catamaran, a windsurfer, a kiteboard or a sportsboat – the Road To Gold provides you with a clear blueprint for improving your skills and results on the race track.
One of the great things about Hamish lifting the curtain on high-level campaigning is that it's removed the 'black magic' and mystique around top class performance. It really is about the aggregation of small gains in multiple areas, always looking for ways of minimising your mistakes. It's not about talent, it's about working hard in the areas that will make the biggest difference to your performance.
Our guarantee is detailed just below. But in a nutshell: if you don't like the course, send us an email within the first 30 days of your purchase and we'll refund your money in full, no questions asked and no hard feelings.
We strongly believe in the power of RTG as an online resource. It’s already been proven to work for hundreds of sailors. But now we’ve launched a new project to bring sailors together with professional coaches. If you feel that you will really benefit from that additional human input into your sailing campaign, then here’s what’s on offer...
Our coaching capacity is limited, so we’re opening this up to only a few Road To Goldsters who want to work closely with an expert coach.
To learn more about how it works, click the ELITE INFO button below.
We'll see you on the other side! 🏆
