If you’re not already familiar with Hamish Willcox, he’s had a remarkable career: since winning his first 470 world title in 1981 at the age of 19, he’s gone on to coach professional sailors at the peak of their careers in both Olympic and America’s Cup campaigns...
- won x3 470 world titles with helmsman David Barnes in the early 80s
- coached at eight Olympic Games (x3 GBR, x5 NZ) - x1 Gold and x4 Silver medals
- worked in five America's Cup campaigns, twice with Luna Rossa (2000, 2007), once with Oneworld (2003) and once with Oracle (2010), primarily in the weather programmes, but also doing after-guard roles for in-house racing and training. And more recently on the High Performance team for Emirates Team New Zealand victory in 2021.
- coached Pete Burling & Blair Tuke to Olympic Gold at the Rio Games, and last year helped them become the first sailors of all time to win an America’s Cup and Olympic medal in the same year
- coached for Great Britain during its halcyon rise with Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Shirley Robertson (1997 to 2008).
- Optimist coach for New Zealand 2003-2005, with NZ coming first overall at the OP Worlds 2004
- New Zealand National Coach 1992-1997, managing x5 world youth teams (x1 win, always Top 5) plus the 470 Women’s team 1992
- sailed in the Round the World Race
